NFL QBs challenging Trevon Diggs may find themselves in a hole.
The Cowboys defensive back has been off to a ridiculous start in 2021, with six interceptions in five games, leading a Cowboys defensive renaissance under new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
Diggs has picked off some marquee QBs to start the 2021 season, running his consecutive games with an interception streak to five. He’s got a decent shot to make it six games in a row with a pick when the Cowboys face rookie QB Mac Jones and the Patriots in Week 6.
The DB is coming off a promising rookie season, but is off to a historic start to his sophomore season: Even Troy Aikman is impressed, comparing him to Deion Sanders. That’s pretty hefty praise.
Trevon Diggs’ interception streak
With six interceptions in five games, Diggs has one interception in every game so far this season, and he needs three more games with a pick to match the all-time INT streak of eight games.
That’s with a catch, though: Tom Morrow’s streak of eight consecutive games with an interception stretched across two seasons with the Raiders (1962-1963). The single-season mark is six games, held by three players, including Tom Landry — yes, that Tom Landry — who set the record in the 1950s with the Giants.
Diggs has interceptions off the following QBs:
- Week 1: Tom Brady, Buccaneers (Buccaneers win 31-29)
- Week 2: Justin Herbert, Chargers (Cowboys win, 20-17)
- Week 3: Jalen Hurts, Eagles (Cowboys win 41-21)
- Week 4: Sam Darnold, Panthers (twice, Cowboys win 36-28)
- Week 5: Mike Glennon, Giants (Cowboys win, 44-20)
Diggs has 10 pass breakups so far in 2021, just four off his 2020 total of 14. If he keeps the pace — and QBs keep challenging him — he may surpass Darrelle Revis’ mark of 31, set in 2009 with the Jets.
He’s already doubled his rookie season total of three interceptions — and he’s done it before Week 5.
While Diggs can make a run at the consecutive games with an INT mark, he has a ways to go to to set the NFL mark for interceptions in a season. Dick “Night Train” Lane holds the record for most interceptions in a single season with 14, a mark that was set in 1952, his rookie season.
If that happens, he might turn out to be a better receiver than his brother.
